The first in a trilogy of unrelated films, 1988's Tiger Cage is our first film from the world of Hong Kong action cinema. Directed by the legendary Yuen Woo-ping -- who is primarily known in the West for his work as fight choreographer for both The Matrix and Kill Bill -- Tiger Cage is his first film set in modern day Hong Kong, as well as his first contribution to the heroic bloodshed genre (made popular by directors like John Woo and Ringo Lam). This ultraviolent, bleak cop tale about deception and betrayal stars a very young Donnie Yen (of John Wick 4, in his third credited role) and is an excellent distillation of all the things that make Hong Kong action cinema truly exceptional: intricate, creative fight choreography; stylish, squibby gunplay; and insanely dangerous stunt work, from big-time falls to jumping through the windshield of a moving car. Although it may be a relatively obscure title in the West, for action die hards to casual viewers, Tiger Cage is not to be missed!
